PHS Boys Golf: Underclassmen lead Jackets

By John George

The Yellowjacket boys golf team took on some tough competition and a tough course on Saturday as they took part in the Staples-Motley Invitational at The Vintage G.C. Perham finished tied for fifth with Pequot Lakes in the 16-team field with a 336.

Jackets freshman Dan Cavanagh led the team with a 78 (38-40), good for a tie for fifth place individually. S-M's Nick Forsberg was the medalist with a 72.

Eighth grader Evan Arvig was next on the team with an 82 (41-41). Another freshman, Zach Phelps, was third on the team with an 85 (41-44).

"The Vintage is pretty tough course," head coach Jeff Tweeton said. "Evan's 82 is pretty good for his first time on the course. Dan played very well to tie for fifth. It was good to see a few different teams there."

St. Cloud Cathedral won the team title with a 313, followed by the host Cardinals in second with a 324. East Grand Forks was third, followed by Providence Academy (Plymouth), then Perham and Pequot Lakes.

Arvig, Cavanagh tie

at Pelican Rapids

Cavanagh and Arvig tied for the lead on Monday at Birchwood G.C. as the Yellowjackets won the HOL at Pelican Rapids.

Perham finished with a team score of 150 as Arvig and Cavanagh both shot a 36. Arvig was named medalist on a scorecard playoff.

A scorecard playoff is where they compare scores of the tied golfers on the course's hardest hold, the No. 1 handicap hole. If one golfer birdied, and the other hit par, the one who birdied wins the tiebreak.

If the tied golfers both shot the same score at the No. 1 handicap, they go to the No. 2 handicap. And so on until the tie is broken.

2nd at DGF

Another scorecard playoff was needed Tuesday at The Meadows G.C. in Moorhead. D-G-F hosted the HOL teams for 18 holes on Tuesday with the front-nine playing as the Rebels HOL Meet.

Cavanagh was involved for another tie for first place. This time, he was awarded the medalist with a scorecard playoff with H/U-H's Jon Speath. Both had rounds of 36 to lead the field.

H/U-H won the team title with a 156. Perham was second with a 165, followed by D-G-F with a 168.

Cavanagh was also the medalist over 18 holes with a 72. Arvig shot a 87 (42-45).

Perham still holds on to a tie for first in the season standings with H/U-H. D-G-F is a distant third.

Busy Week

The Jackets will be very busy next week with three HOL meets and the Fargo Invitational.

Tweeton said he's looking forward to the competition at the Fargo Invite May 1-2. The two-day, 36-hole tournament has been moved from Edgwood G.C in Fargo to Wildflower G.C. on Pelican Lake. Familiar territory for the Jackets. Tee times Friday start at 3 p.m.

Perham will also play close to home prior to that when they go to the HOL at LP-A today (April 30) at Forrest Hills G.C. west of Detroit Lakes. After the Fargo Invite, the Jackets will play in the HOL at Hawley on May 4, the HOL at Frazee on May 5, then the HOL at Barnesville on May 7.
