NYM Softball: Win-streak snapped by OTC

Sam Welter is congratulated by Stephanie Cichy after scoring a run during the Eagles' 9-1 win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday in New York Mills.

The New York Mills Lady Eagle softball team won their 5th straight game Friday by beating Wadena-Deer Creek, 9-1.

A RBI single by Nicole Nebosis in the first and a two-run single by Emaleigh Roberts in the second gave Mills a quick 3-0 lead over the Wolverines. After another run scored in the fourth, the Eagles broke the game open in the fifth with three more runs. Sam Welter brought in Nebosis and Kim Becker, then eventually scored herself on a single by Kendra McCall.

Mills tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. The first on a RBI single by Kristen Perala to score Roberts. Steph Cichy scored the team's final run on a sac fly by Becker.

W-DC scored one in the seventh off Cichy, who picked up her fifth win by allowing just two hits while striking out five.

Mills hadn't played Wadena-Deer Creek since 2007, when the Wolverines won, 4-1.

Aarows lose 1st game

NY Mills handed the Ashby Aarows their first loss of the season Monday with a 5-3 home victory.

The Arrows led 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth when the Eagles strung together three hits along with two walks to score four runs and take the lead.

New York Mills had ten hits to the Arrows five.

The Aarows (5-1) won the regular season meeting last year over NY Mills in five innings, 13-3. But the Lady Eagles got their revenge with a 8-4 win in the 6A Sub-Section quarterfinals, 8-4.

OTC gets sweep

The Otter Tail Central girls softball team swept New York Mills in a Tuesday double header, winning 5-3 in the first game and taking the second game, 12-9.

OTC led 3-2 going into the seventh inning of game one and pushed across two more runs to make it 5-2. The Eagles managed just one run in the home half of the seventh.

NY Mills led 9-8 in game two when OTC scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the lead. The Lady Bulldogs added an insurance run in the sixth.

OTC was on a 19-game Park Region Conference winning streak (dating back to May 2007) until Sebeka snapped that string with an 11-3 win last Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs did avenge that loss by beating Sebeka 6-0 in the second game of that doubleheader.

OTC went 14-0 in the conference last year (23-2 overall) and won the Section 8AA championship to advance to their first State Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs beat Mills 8-3 and 6-0 last year.

Homestand ends

The end of the Eagles seven-game homestand comes to an end today (April 30) with a doubleheader against Menahga. The two teams split last year's double dip with Mills taking the first game, 9-1, and the Braves taking game two, 11-1.

The Lady Eagles will head south on May 5 for two games at Parkers Prairie. Mills won both regular season games last season against the Panthers, 8-2 and 12-5. But Parkers Prairie was able to pick up an 8-3 win over the Eagles in the 6A Sub-Section semifinals.

New York Mills will remain on the road May 7 for a doubleheader at Verndale.

The first game in all three doubleheaders will start at 4 p.m.
