New assistant chief named in Ottertail

Ottertail Fire Chief Adam Wedde was in attendance at the Sept. 3 Ottertail City Council meeting to present his recommendation for a 2nd Assistant Chief to replace Justin Gunkel.

According to Wedde, Gunkel left the fire department abruptly last month, after receiving a job offer in the Sabin area. As Gunkel's replacement, Wedde suggested Tim Lueders be named temporary 2nd Assistant Chief.

The council voted unanimously to approve Lueders' appointment to the fire department position.

Wedde also informed the council about a September 26 live burn planned in Dent. The burn will involve a four-level house, with another small house. The substantial size of the house will provide plenty of opportunities for area firefighters to practice their skills.

There is a $25 a day charge for the firemen to take part in the burn. Wedde said he would like to send four or five people over to Dent to get involved in the controlled burn. The burn provides a unique opportunity for firefighters to get hands-on training in a supervised environment.

Wedde told the council that he might be able to get some grant money to reimburse some of the various training costs the fire department incurs.
