Rehab of housing, commercial properties focus of Perham meeting

The City of Perham recently received word that it has been invited back to round two of the Department of Employment and Economic Development's (DEED) Small Cities Development Program.

The city's application requests funding for three kinds of rehabilitation work: residential rehab, rental property rehab, and commercial property rehab.

To help the community gather information and set priorities, a hearing will be set Dec. 14, 7 p.m. in the council chambers. Topics to be discussed include: rehabilitation of commercial buidlings, housing and rental units.

Homeowners who qualify would be eligible for up to $20,000 in grant funds to be utilized for roofing, siding, windows, energy efficiency projects, or accessibility projects.

Rental property owners would be eligible for grant funds up to $10,973 per rental unit.

The funds would be utilized for the same type of fix-up projects-energy efficiency, safety, accessibility, etc.

Commercial property owners would be eligible for up to $20,000 in grant funds. These funds could be utilized in projects similar to any residential project, but could also be used for façade improvements, code compliance issues, or to correct exterior defects.

While funding may not be received, since the city's application is still being considered, it is hopeful that a final award will be made when the application process is completed in the spring of 2010.

Completing the pre-application does not commit anyone to participation in this program. It is simply a fact finding tool to show DEED that there is a need for and interest in this program.
