Washington man arrested in connection with terroristic threats to Perham middle school

An 18-year-old Washington man has been arrested after leaving threatening voicemails Monday evening on Perham's Prairie Wind Middle School answering machine, according to the Perham Police Department.

The man was identified by Perham police after the phone number -- initially blocked -- was traced back to a man residing in Washington state, who was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of telephone harassment.

The call was made to the school at 10:16 p.m. and was discovered by school officials Tuesday morning. The school, already in lockdown because of the death of Tabitha Lee Belmonte, a 16-year-old Perham sophomore, continued its lockdown and gave students the option of leaving.

Perham Superintendent Tamara Uselman said the caller used profanity in the message and made threats of violence.

The Perham Police Department did not say if the man had ties to Perham or Otter Tail County. The case will be handled in Washington.
