Young women vie for titles of Miss Perham, Miss Heart of the Lakes

Four young women will compete for the title of Miss Perham, and six will compete for the title of Miss Heart of the Lakes at the Miss Perham/Heart of the Lakes Pageant on Friday, July 29 at 7 p.m. in the Perham High School Auditorium.

Contestants for Miss Perham, who must be a student at Perham High School to be eligible to compete, include:

-Karlie Hoekstra, 19, whose platform is called "Community Connections." Hoekstra's talent is jazz dance.

-Kari Hanson, 19, whose talent is humorous monologue, is running on a platform of celebrating muscular dystrophy.

-Paige Meyer, 19, is running on a platform called "It's No Joke, Say No to Smoke." Meyer's talent is ballet en pointe.

-Emily Peterson, 17, whose talent is classical vocal. Peterson's platform is involving youth in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Contestants for Miss Heart of the Lakes, who must be between 17-24 years old and live and work full time in Minnesota, include:

-Brittany Tischmak, 23, from Sauk Rapids. Tischmak, whose talent is piano, is running on a platform of fighting childhood cancer.

-Heather Pearson, 18, from Lake Park. Pearson's platform is called "Putting the UNITY in community." Her talent is vocal.

-Katie Strand, 19, from Brainerd. Strand's talent is a monologue, and her platform is called "New Pathways: Serving the Area's Homeless."

-Emma Hilgart, 19, from Brainerd. Hilgart is running on a platform of voting, and her talent is vocal.

-Hanna Larson, 19, from Wadena. Larson's talent is piano, and her platform is called "A 'Trichy' Disease: Trichotillomania."

-Caitlyn Thompson, 23, from Vadnais Heights. Thompson is running on a platform of breast cancer awareness and prevention, and her talent is lyrical dance.

Miss Minnesota 2011 Natalie Davis and other local talent will perform at the pageant. Miss Perham 2010 Brittany Bachmann, and Miss Heart of the Lakes 2010 Kalli Randall, will both be present at the pageant to pass off their crowns.

Tickets for the pageant cost $8 at the door. The official flower sponsor of the pageant is Ma's Little Red Barn.

The winner of the pageant will go on to compete at the Miss Minnesota competition in June 2012.
