Fairgrounds barn to get new paint job

The East Otter Tail County Fair Board has been awarded 40 gallons of paint to use on the exterior of the hog and sheep barn at the fairgrounds.

The award is part of Minnesota-based Valspar Corporation's Minnesota Beautiful program. In total, the company is awarding 584 gallons of paint around the west central Minnesota area.

"This project is very important to the community, as many 4-H and FFA participants exhibit top quality animals in this building, and they also do well at other state fairs around the region," said Karen Gorentz, a director on the fair board. "It is the fair board's hope that by updating this building, it will not only help to attract visitors, but will help educate consumers about the two agricultural industries represented in the building."

The 2012 grantees were selected based on the visual impact of the project, public benefit to the community, local volunteer participation and support, intended use of the building and benefit to the needy. Projects that normally qualify include, but are not limited to, historic buildings, senior citizen or handicapped facilities, community centers, public buildings and murals.

"We are very fortunate to have two collaborators on this project, the Perham Boys and Girls Club and the Rock-A-Boosters 4-H Club. Both organizations are willing to participate in a combined 20 hours of painting the barn. In addition, the city of Perham is also on board and is very supportive of our efforts at the fairgrounds," Gorentz said.

She added that the Minnesota Beautiful program provides the fair board with "an opportunity that will go above and beyond the traditional scope of our budget. We are very fortunate to have been chosen as a recipient for this program that will impact not only the Perham community, but will have effects county wide."

Thirteen organizations throughout the nine-county region will receive paints, coatings and sealants from Valspar this year.
