Weather service says conditions 'critical' for fires this afternoon

FARGO - Gusty winds and low humidity will produce "critical" fire weather conditions this afternoon across eastern North Dakota and a portion of northwest Minnesota this afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

A red flag warning is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Winds will shift to the north by late morning and increase, and humidity will quickly drop, the weather service said.

The combination of northwest winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, relative humidity as low as 20 percent and temperatures in the mid-70s to low-80s will create "explosive fire growth potential," the weather service warned in a statement.

Any fires that develop will spread rapidly, and outdoor burning is restricted.
