Hunting incident takes life of Nevis man

A Nevis hunter died of gunshot wounds on Fourth Crow Wing Lake in southeast Hubbard County Saturday afternoon after being shot by his hunting partner.

According to Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes, 23-year-old Adam Earl Poole and a friend were hunting in a channel between 3rd and 4th Crow Wing lakes when they both stood up to shoot at waterfowl. The friend lost his footing and his shot struck Poole in the head, killing him instantly.

A call came in  at 4:40 p.m. Deputies, fire departments, ambulances and volunteers rushed to the remote location in  Crow Wing Lake Township, trying to get a boat with the victim across the lake where an ambulance crew was waiting.

The hunter was deceased by the time the boat had crossed the lake north of Round Bay, off Highway 87.

His body was taken to a Park Rapids funeral home, then transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office late Saturday. An autopsy will be performed.

As the female dispatcher was inundated with calls inquiring how serious the gunshot wound was, she finally radioed: “All I could hear was screaming. It didn’t sound good.”

Poole, a newlywed, was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Wedding pictures posted on his Facebook page featured an overjoyed groom and groomsmen dressed in satin camoflage vests and hats. He married his wife Allison on Sept. 7.

No charges are expected. The incident is under investihgation by the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department, which is not releasing the name of the hunting companion.
