Driver backs over pedestrian in Vergas

A 59-year-old woman required treatment for multiple injuries after being backed over by a car outside the Vergas Hardware Store.

Witnesses said Renae Rocholl, of Elizabeth, was knocked over while on the Main Street sidewalk in front of the store, and then pinned under the vehicle for a short time until the driver pulled forward, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver, Twila Coleman, age 78, of Vergas, accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal while she was backing up in an attempt to parallel park, the sheriff’s office reported. She went up onto the curb, knocked down two posts and then knocked over Rocholl.

Rocholl was transported to Perham Health to be treated for multiple injuries. The sheriff’s office said the injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Coleman was not injured in the Aug. 15 incident.

Damages were estimated to be in excess of $1,000. A citation was not immediately issued.
