Hit-and-run boating accident leaves one seriously injured; public's help sought
A West Fargo man was seriously injured, and his 4-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries, in a hit-and-run boating accident on Big Cormorant Lake in southwest Becker County July 4.
At approximately 10:18 p.m., the Becker County Sheriff's Office was notified that a boat had been struck, and injured victims were being transported to the County Road 6 public access by witnesses who had been boating at the time.
The boat that got hit, a 17-foot Bayliner, was carrying three adults and two children and was operating at a slow speed with its navigation lights on. Terry Lee Erickson, 39, of West Fargo, received substantial bodily harm and was later transferred to a Minneapolis area hospital. His 4-year-old daughter also sustained minor injuries.
According to a release from the sheriff's office, witnesses have been unable to give a positive identification of the boat that struck the Bayliner, due to darkness and the speed at which that boat was operating. The driver of the boat that struck and injured the individuals left the scene immediately.
After an extensive search of Big Cormorant, investigators were unable to locate the boat in question.
The Becker County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to contact their office at 218-847-2661 with any information that may help in this case.
A possible description of the boat may be: A larger 18-20 foot white or cream colored boat, possibly with a cabin-style helm and a darker stripe along its side. The boat would likely have some damage to its bow or front area. It is unknown whether the boat is fiberglass or aluminum.
