Fargo 18-year-old still in hospital following July 4 boating accident on West McDonald Lake
FARGO - Former Fargo North goaltender Nick Schmit remains hospitalized after being injured in a boating accident on July 4.
The family has requested Schmit's condition not be released.
The accident happened at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday on the north side of West McDonald Lake near Dent.
Schmit, 18, was swimming when a passing boat operated by 19-year-old Lucas Buerkley went over him, striking him with its propeller.
The boat's occupants rescued Schmit, brought him to shore and called 911.
Schmit was taken by ambulance to Perham Health, where he was airlifted to Sanford Health in Fargo for surgery.
The boat involved in the accident - a 2000 Crownline - is owned by 49-year-old Robert Schmit of Fargo.
Buerkley is a 2011 graduate of North High School and played hockey with Schmit. He is a student at North Dakota State University.
Schmit graduated from Fargo North a month ago and was a member of the school's 2011-12 state hockey championship team.
Schmit recorded 23 saves in the Spartans' 3-2 overtime win over Grafton-Park River in the state title game.
