Update: Broadside crash near Sebeka leaves man in serious condition

Lieutenant Mike Wedin of the Minnesota State Patrol said Nathan Wierimaa, 26, the single occupant of the pictured silver Pontiac sedan suffered serious injuries in the collision, while the two occupants of the other vehicle involved suffered minor injuries.

Authorities responded to a two-vehicle crash at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday about two miles north of Sebeka on Highway 71 near 308th Street.

Lieutenant Mike Wedin of the Minnesota State Patrol said a silver Pontiac was traveling northbound on Highway 71 and was signaling a left turn into a private residence. Wedin said two cars had stopped while waiting for the Pontiac to turn, and when it did, a Toyota Highlander attempted to pass the group of cars via the passing lane and struck the Pontiac on its passenger side, causing the Pontiac to roll over.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and traffic had to be rerouted on the busy highway. The Pontiac had one occupant, Nathan Wierimaa, 26, who suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the Twin Cities.

The Highlander had two occupants who suffered minor injuries and were taken to Tri-County Health Care, Wedin said. They were identified as a couple from Avon, Robert B. Fulton, 70, and Jacquelyn M. Fulton, 72.

Sergeant Jesse Grabow said Wierimaa was first taken to Tri-County Health Care and then transported by helicopter to a hospital in St. Cloud. A representative from St. Cloud Hospital said Monday that Wierimaa was in good condition.
