Perham woman opens 'Untangled' salon

Perham native Laura Schumacher is about to see a longtime dream of hers come true.

After more than a decade of working in and managing salons for other companies, she's now the proud owner of her own - Untangled Tanning and Hair Spa. She said the store will be celebrating its grand opening in early November.

Located in the former Tropics Tanning building on Main Street in Perham, Untangled will add a hair salon to the existing tanning business.

Schumacher is currently in the process of remodeling and redecorating to make the place reflect her style and meet her needs. She's already replaced the flooring, repainted, knocked down some walls and started setting some equipment up.

Two 15-minute lay-down tanning beds and one 12-minute stand-up capsule are currently available to customers while the salon part of the business is under construction. Schumacher is hoping to have the whole project complete within the next couple of weeks, and will start seeing salon clients at that time.

"I'm excited," she said in an interview Monday. "It's a dream come true."

A 1998 graduate of Perham High School, Schumacher moved to Fargo, N.D. after graduation to attend Joseph's School of Hair Design. Afterward, she worked for years as a stylist and manager at salons in Fargo. She has both her Minnesota and North Dakota salon manager's license.

About a year ago, Schumacher moved back home with her three kids to be closer to family. She worked for Sorella's in Perham, then at a salon in Detroit Lakes, before she heard that Tropics Tanning was for sale.

"This opportunity came about, and I dove in," she said. "Salons are the only thing I know, and this seemed to be a perfect fit."

Schumacher said she decided on the name Untangled for two reasons: First, "U tan" is hidden in the name; and second, it has personal meaning for her, as "my life has finally reached a point of being untangled, in a lot of ways."

For now, at least, Schumacher will be the only full-time stylist at the salon. However, she's already hired four part-time stylists to help fill in for her when she's busy. This will also allow her to work some evenings and weekends, for the convenience of her customers.

Her specialty, she said, are hairstyles and cuts.

"Pretty much any haircut, I can rock out," she said. "And I love to do color, because it's so fun."

Untangled is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tanning is currently available; the salon will be opening soon.
