A resident near New York Mills reported a stolen vehicle on Jan. 23.
According to sheriff deputies, it appears someone close to the suspect forged a signature on the vehicle title during a sales transaction. In Minnesota, law requires that the original owner sign the title certificate over to the new owner.
Charges were pending against the suspect who made the fraudulent sale.
A rural Pelican Rapids resident received an email with a threat that he would be harmed if a payment of $1,800 was not made.
The emailer preferred, on Jan. 23, that use of Bitcoin be used as payment. This is a cryptocurrency and worldwide payment system.
"This was an obvious scam attempt," said a county sheriff deputy, "and it is well and good that the rural Pelican Rapids resident did not take the bait."
Vehicle stolen, pushed off cliff near Orwell Dam
Sheriff deputies, on Jan. 29, reported that a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was stolen from a location southeast of downtown Fergus Falls and later discovered on Jan. 27 and smashed on ice near Orwell Dam, south of Fergus Falls.
Deputies said the thief likely put the vehicle in neutral and pushed the Blazer over an embankment. The vehicle, ruined, hit the ice but did not become submerged in water.
The vehicle was stolen late on Jan. 24 or early on Jan. 25. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
Dispute results in injures in Deer Creek
Two individuals were injured during a dispute near Deer Creek on Jan. 28, along Highway 106 north of town.
A caller to the sheriff office who owns the home occupied by her son said she wanted help in removing a 40-year-old female visitor to the home.
When deputies arrived, they found two people injured following a dispute. As of Jan. 29 it was still unknown who was the primary aggressor.
The investigation was continuing on Jan. 29.
Restraining order may be needed in Deer Creek
Deputies were called from a bar in Deer Creek on Jan. 28 after threats were made outside the bar from a person previously issued with a no-trespass court order.
The caller said the threats were made not only to him but also to customers outside the bar.
Law enforcement said it might be necessary to give the individual a court-ordered Harassment Restraining Order (HRO).
Possible sexual assault reported
Deputies, on Jan. 29, were looking into a possible sexual assault Jan. 27 northeast of Vergas and south of Frazee.
A male suspect was arrested for third degree DWI and obstruction of justice. He was taken to the Otter Tail County jail in Fergus Falls.
Cash taken from vehicle
Close to $100 in cash was taken from an unlocked vehicle at Walker Avenue, New York Mills. The incident was reported on Jan. 28.
The theft likely took place late in the evening on Jan. 27 or in the early morning hours of Jan. 28.
