Felony sentencing has been handed down in a theft case which was first investigated early September of last year, according to Otter Tail County court records.
On Sept. 7, a representative of the Big Foot Gas and Grocery, of Vining, informed investigators that an employee, identified in the complaint as 56-year-old Kelly Barton Dietz, a resident of Henning, had taken a bank bag containing cash from the business but "was going to return it."
Surveillance footage captured the incident wherein Dietz is said to have removed what appeared to be a bank bag containing more than $4,000 from a company safe, before placing the bag in his back pocket. A deputy interviewed the suspect some time thereafter, and court documents say that Dietz admitted he had taken the bag on Sept. 2. The report notes that while the bag was later returned with much of the cash still intact, a total of $1,335.43 was found to be missing.
Dietz entered a guilty plea to the theft charge in November of last year, and the official sentencing put in place Monday afternoon will require him to make restitution to the business, in addition to requisite court fees. Dietz was also ordered to serve 20 days in jail with credit given for 20 days already served.
