Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son

House break-in reported northeast of Fergus Falls

Sheriff deputies reported a break-in and thefts near Highway 18, northeast of Fergus Falls, on April 2.

Homeowners reported the break-in at 6:26 p.m.

Taken were a strong box from a bedroom, cash, collector coins, personal documents and other items.

The investigation was continuing as of April 3.

Shots fired at abandoned building in town of Vergas

The sheriff office was contacted on April 2 concerning shots fired at an abandoned building in Vergas.

Deputies said the location was along Railway Avenue. An investigation was continuing as of April 3.

Icy roads lead to highway injury west of Perham

Sheriff deputies said icy roads, combined with strong winds, contributed to a minor injury west of Perham on April 3.

The accident took place at 6:18 p.m. near the intersection of Highways 34 and 125.

Deputies said the driver of a pickup was towing a trailer eastbound toward Perham on Highway 34. Strong winds caught the trailer, causing the driver to lose control on the ice-covered roadway.

The pickup entered the north ditch, rolled and the trailer became disconnected.

The pickup and trailer were a total loss.

Fraudulent charges reported

A rural Parkers Prairie resident, on April 3, reported fraudulent charges on a debit card. Another person used the card totaling $327.

An Elizabeth resident, on April 4, had checks stolen and another person used his account.

The account has been closed, and authorities have suspects in mind.

Boat motor stolen

The theft of a boat motor from Erickson Road near Clitherall was reported to sheriff deputies on April 4.

The theft remained under investigation as of April 5.

Man dies after being trampled by cow

Sheriff deputies said a 85-year-old man, living southeast of Deer Creek with a Hewitt mailing address, died after being trampled by one of his cows on April 8.

The victim was Delbert Horn.

"Mr. Horn had been tagging a calf, prior to the tragic incident with the cow," said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke while meeting with news media representatives on Monday morning, April 9.

The incident took place at 10:32 a.m.

"Deputies and first responders from Wadena and Bertha were dispatched to the scene," said Van Dyke. "The location was along Highway 75 in southeastern Otter Tail County, near the Wadena county line."

Horn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Possible assault investigated

County sheriff deputies and the Pelican Rapids Police Department investigated a possible assault at a motel in Pelican Rapids. The possible assault was said to have taken place on April 4.

When officers, the following day, came to the motel with a search warrant they found a man inside the secured motel room.

Detectives learned that a suspect, Jeremy Polz, had used an attic access from inside the main motel lobby and crawled through the motel's common attic space before entering the room that was part of the investigation.

Polz was arrested for obstructing an investigation. Sheriff deputies said that further arrests were likely as the investigation continued.

Man arrested for damage to property

A man was arrested April 4 after to damage to property southeast of Vining.

According to sheriff deputies, the man was angered over a dispute about dog ownership.

He reportedly had weapons when an arrest was made at 3:55 p.m. He also was charged with obstruction of justice.
