Dent woman charged with fleeing police officers

A Dent, Minn., woman is facing felony charges of fleeing a peace officer and first-degree driving while intoxicated-test refusal in connection with a high-speed car chase that took place in Becker County last week.

Marlene Jean Honer, 49, of 40133 Purlieu Road, Dent, made her first appearance Wednesday in Becker County District Court. She was released on $25,000 bond pending her next appearance on June 8.

The charges stemmed from an incident that was reported about 6:30 p.m. May 11 on Highway 10 west of Lake Park. A driving complaint was reported to the Minnesota State Patrol of a dark-colored Cadillac traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. Lake Park Police Officer Kelly Keegel observed a vehicle matching that description swerving from lane to lane and traveling at a visibly high speed.

The officer activated the siren and lights in her squad car and pursued the vehicle, which did not stop. The vehicle continued to travel down Highway 10 even after officers from Audubon, Detroit Lakes and the Becker County Sheriff's Department joined in the chase. It did not stop until a sheriff's deputy employed stop sticks on the road ahead of it.

The driver, later identified as Honer, then pulled into the Detroit Lakes Airport and stopped. She needed assistance in exiting the vehicle, and there was a strong odor of alcohol. A preliminary breath test showed an alcohol concentration of .18 percent. Honer was taken into custody, then refused to submit to alcohol testing at the Law Enforcement Center.

Honer's driving record includes multiple previous convictions for DWI and test refusal, both in Becker and Otter Tail counties.
