White Earth police involved in Highway 113 chase Wednesday

DETROIT LAKES -- Two people in a stolen vehicle led police on high-speed chase on Highway 113 in northern Becker County on Wednesday evening.

Randy Goodwin, Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police for White Earth, said that the incident began earlier Wednesday when an officer investigated a burglary report at a residence near Highway 113 and County Road 37 in the Bad Medicine Lake area.

A cable stretching across the driveway of the residence was reportedly cut, Goodwin said.

He said that the officer obtained a vehicle description and another officer was parked in a field near the home, waiting to see if the vehicle returned.

A vehicle matching the description approached the residence and turned around, Goodwin said.

The officer followed the vehicle and attempted to pull the car over after the driver reportedly acted suspiciously, he said.

With squad car lights and sirens on, officers tried to pull over the vehicle, but it fled, turning onto Strawberry Mountain Road and then onto a minimum-maintenance road.

Slowing down for safety reasons, the officer came upon the empty vehicle and determined two suspects fled. Two ski masks, gloves, flashlight and a pry bar were found in the vehicle, Goodwin said.

Two other White Earth officers responded as well, but the officers were unable to find the suspects after a two-hour search in the heavily-wooded area.

Goodwin said the vehicle was impounded and fingerprints taken to see if a match to a suspect can be made. After the incident, the vehicle was reported stolen.

An investigation is ongoing.
