Two New York Mills men are in jail after a string of overnight burglaries.

Twenty-three-year-olds Kevin Gene Engelke and Douglas Lyon Dabill were arrested near NY Mills around 4:30 a.m. today, two hours after NY Mills Police discovered a vehicle in the ditch off Hwy 10 near the East Otter Tail Landfill, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.

The men were discovered when Amtrack reported that two men were walking along the railroad tracks. When officers responded, the two men fled, but were apprehended by Minnesota State Patrol and NY Mills Police.

The vehicle in the ditch was identified as stolen from a NY Mills storage building. A pickup truck was also stolen from the East Otter Tail Landfill storage building, as well, along with a John Deere loader and back-hoe.

Vehicles stolen from the landfill were discovered in the landfill of Hwy 10, while the back-hoe was retrieved from a township road. All three vehicles were subject to vandalism, as well as the landfill building and office.

Both men admitted to an Otter Tail County Sheriff's detective they were involved with the overnight burglaries and vandalism in the area, according to a sheriff's office press release.

The extent of vandalism is not yet known, but the sheriff's office indicated it would be in the thousands of dollars.
