Infant's death leads to manslaughter charge

Pedro Mendoza, 31, of Pelican Rapids, has been sentenced to four years, nine months in jail for second-degree manslaughter related to the death of a five-month-old boy.

Otter Tail County Court records state that on Nov. 18, 2011, Mendoza reported his girlfriend's infant had fallen off a bed and was unresponsive. The child died the following day. Later, a physician stated that the injuries could not have been caused by a child falling off a bed. The infant had sustained two fractures to the back of the head, consistent with contact injury.

Mendoza will be credited with 312 days of time already served, according to court documents.

He was committed to the St. Cloud Correctional Facility. After serving his time there, he will be deported back to Guatemala. He is an illegal immigrant.
