DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – A woman is dead and a man injured following an incident downtown here Wednesday afternoon.

Police Chief Tim Eggebraaten said officers responded to a request to check on the welfare of a person on the 900 block of Washington Avenue just before 3 p.m.

They found a 69-year-old woman dead and a 56-year-old man injured. The man was taken by ambulance to the Detroit Lakes hospital. His condition was not released.

Names were not released Wednesday pending notification of the victims’ kin.

Becker County deputies helped city police officers cordon off the 900 block of Washington Avenue for about an hour, until emergency responders could secure the scene.

Police say the public is not in danger.

“We’re not looking for any suspects at this time. There is no immediate threat,” Eggebraaten said.

The flashing lights and ambulances pulling up downtown in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon caused a stir for businesses and residents nearby.

“Everyone’s been kind of buzzing, coming in and out, looking through our windows, trying to see what’s going on. It’s crazy. It’s insane,” said Stefani Evans, a barista who works down the street at a cafe within view of the scene.

“Being a smaller town, everyone knows each other. So, I’m sure it’s going to be hard on a lot of people,” Evans said.

Police said the relationship between the man and woman was unclear.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation.
