Two men are dead after an apparent murder-suicide near New York Mills last week.

Authorities received a call at 9:13 p.m. last Wednesday from a 21-year-old woman who reported gunshots at a location east of New York Mills on County Highway 56, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Emergency responders found 20-year-old Ethan Honer, of Dent, dead at the scene, and 23-year-old Jacob Geiser, of Bluffton, with serious gunshot wounds. Geiser was airflighted to the St. Cloud Hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Witnesses at the scene indicated to law enforcement that Geiser shot Honer, then shot himself. Administrative Sheriff’s Lieutenant Matthew McGuire confirmed last week that the shooting was an apparent murder-suicide.

McGuire said the sheriff’s office had determined a possible motive in that Geiser was the ex-boyfriend of a woman Honer was currently involved with.

“It’s pretty clear what happened … there was a common girlfriend, and the ex-boyfriend shot the current boyfriend,” McGuire said.

Two witnesses saw the shooting, he said. He declined to comment on the relation of the witnesses to the two men.
