Father and son arrested for the murder of Fergus Falls man

A father and son suspected of shooting and killing one of their own relatives over drug money in Otter Tail County last May were located and arrested in Arizona on Monday evening.

Michael Alan Burris, age 64, and Michael Kyle Burris, age 23, are in custody in the Maricopa County Jail awaiting extradition proceedings, according to a press release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

They face charges of second degree murder in the death of Scott Burris, who was their nephew and cousin.

Scott was reported as missing last May, after the vehicle he had been driving was found abandoned, with blood in it, in a wooded area north of Elizabeth. His body was later found in the Otter Tail River, west of Orwell Dam. An autopsy showed that he died from a single gunshot wound and was the victim of a homicide, according to the release.

Investigators determined that the last place Scott was known to be alive was at the home of Michael Alan and Michael Kyle, on Oak Street in Fergus Falls. His phone went dead shortly after he arrived there and his van sat in front of the residence until late in the evening, when it was moved, ending up at the Elizabeth location.

Information obtained by investigators indicated that Scott went to the Oak Street residence to pick up drugs, and that both Michael Alan and Michael Kyle had provided false information to authorities. Investigators learned that Scott was involved in drug activity with his uncle and may have owed him a substantial amount of money.

In mid-April of 2013, Michael Alan and Michael Kyle picked up and left their Oak Street home and moved to Mesa, Ariz.

After gathering information for more than a year, investigators charged the father and son with second degree murder and issued an arrest warrant. The Maricopa Sheriff’s Office located the suspects on Aug. 12 and brought them into custody.
