Drunk driver in Perham crash gets probation

The drunk driver involved in an accident that caused serious injuries to a Perham man in August has been sentenced in Otter Tail County District Court.

Ryan Nathan Palmer, 35, of Richville, was sentenced Dec. 2 to four years’ probation, following a felony conviction for operating a vehicle with negligence while under the influence of alcohol, court records show.

The sentence is a stay of imposition pursuant to successful completion of probation standards. If Palmer remains law abiding and meets his probation requirements, he will have his conviction reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

The judge also ordered Palmer to pay a $500 fine.

Palmer was involved in a two-vehicle collision near Fort Thunder Road and Harvest Avenue in rural Perham on the afternoon of Aug. 1.

Court records state that law enforcement called to the scene found two Ford pickups in the ditch. Palmer was in one vehicle and in the other vehicle were its driver, Matthew Honer, and a passenger, Hunter Nodsle.

Honer was treated at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, N.D., diagnosed with a displaced fracture of the pelvis and another fracture, according to court documents. He received 18 sutures to close a laceration in his lower abdomen and 13 sutures to close a laceration on the left side of his head.

Testing of Palmer’s blood alcohol content, at 7 p.m. the evening of the accident, showed an alcohol concentration of .35. Deputies at the scene of the accident also noted that Palmer appeared to be intoxicated and disoriented. He was taken to detox.
