New York Mills man assaults woman, sets house on fire

A 56-year-old New York Mills man is being treated for smoke inhalation after assaulting a woman at their home and then starting the house on fire.

Three other people were also in the home at the time of the fire, and managed to extinguish it, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office. The home is located on North Tousley Avenue in New York Mills.

A 50-year-old woman who resides at the home reported the fire. The sheriff’s office received the 911 call about the incident on Feb. 5 at about 4 a.m.

Authorities later determined that the caller had been assaulted by the 56-year-old male, who also resides at the home.

One woman suffered minor injuries from the alleged assault, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and later taken by airflight to a hospital in Minneapolis.

Assisting the sheriff’s office at the scene were the New York Mills Fire Department, Perham and Wadena police departments and Tri-County Ambulance.

The incident is under investigation by the sheriff’s office. No further details were known at press time.
