Wieser-Matthews elected president of state communication association

Dr. Sandra Wieser-Matthews has a new feather to add to her cap.

Wieser-Matthews, a speech teacher, coach and technology integrationist at Perham High School, was voted President of the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota at the group’s 2013 conference.

“It felt surreal, like an out-of-body experience,” she said.

The association, which is connected to the Minnesota State High School League, is the “parent organization” for Minnesota’s speech coaches, college professors of communication, debate coaches and theater directors, Wieser-Matthews explained in an email to the Focus.

When she was contacted about being put on the ballot, Wieser-Matthews recalled saying, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I don’t need to lead to serve,” she explained.

After she was formally nominated, she shared her “four personal canons” at the conference. She promised to provide service, promote collaboration and inclusiveness, increase diversity in coaching, and reach out through technology.

“It’s a privilege to go to the conference,” Wieser-Matthews said, noting that distance, time and funding prevents some association members from attending.

Her goal, “if anything,” is to arrange for association members who cannot attend next year’s conference in person to have virtual access through recorded video or live streaming.
