Perham girl places 3rd in state art contest
A Perham fourth grader is flying high after earning a top spot among young artists in Minnesota.
Elsa Brandvold, a student at Heart of the Lakes Elementary School, is a winner in the 2017 Minnesota Aviation Art Contest, taking third place among kids ages 6-9.
Music teacher Kim Jacobson gave her fourth graders the option to enter the art contest after learning that this year's contest theme was "Beyond the Clouds." She thought that fit in well with the current theme of her music program, which centers on the story of a B17 pilot and crew who jump out of their B17 plane in parachutes after the plane is shot down.
Jacobson said Brandvold is one of just nine winners out of 246 entries statewide. The winners in each age category receive certificates for 30-minute introductory flights at their local airports.
The annual Minnesota Aviation Art Contest is meant to help students learn about aviation through art designed around a related theme. The contest is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Office of Aeronautics and Aviation.
