High school Interact group supports Hurricane Harvey relief effort
The Perham High school Interact group is raising funds for victims of Hurricane Harvey, placing buckets around town for people to fill with their spare change.
Megan Tellinghuisen, a senior at PHS and treasurer of Interact, said the purpose of the service project is to help the victims and highlight how the little things can really add up.
"Mrs. Tostenson, a teacher at the high school gave us the idea for Hurricane Harvey. We are making announcements at the high school, teachers are putting cups and buckets, and cans in their classrooms, and we have four businesses we are working with, " said Tellinghuisen.
The Nest, PACC, United Community Bank - Main Branch, and the information desk at the hospital all have buckets on hand for patrons to put their extra change in to help the cause.
Interact is a Rotary sponsored organization with the purpose of getting high schoolers involved in community outreach and service projects. The group has international, national and local projects. In addition to Tellinghuisen, other officers include: President Emily Martinson, Vice President Kolbey Bormann, and Secretary Lindsey Soule.
The group started the fundraiser last Thursday and it will end on September 15. Telllinghuisen said the short time period was set to create a sense of urgency and help get the money to the Red Cross as soon as possible.
