Speech team takes second

The Yellowjacket Speech team took second out of 11 teams at a tournament in Staples on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets competed with just half their team members due to illness and other school trips. Even with only half the team, however, they only missed first place by 18 points.

The team travels to Apple Valley this weekend to compete at the Star Tribune Eastview Lightning Classic. It is one of the largest tournaments in the state.

Staples offered a final round and Perham placed in finals in 12 out of 13 categories. The following competitors placed:

Creative: Brian Howey, 1st.

Discussion: Riley Tostenson, Excellent; Kiowa Wieser-Matthews, 5th; and Kris Hanson, 2nd.

Drama: Callie Wengel, 5th.

Duo: Sam Green and Callie Wengel, Excellent; Syd Karles and Aubrey Hill, 5th; Chris Knutson and Rory Risk, 4th; and Brian Howey and Nick Honer, 2nd.

Humor: Nick Honer, 2nd.

Inform: Paityn Lund, 6th.

Extemporaneous Reading: Kayla Heier, 1st.

Original Oratory: Mikalea Sondag, 4th; Dalton Dahms, 2nd; Mark Huebsch, 1st.

Poetry: Elshan, 2nd; Emma Sweere, 1st.

Prose: Sam Green, 5th.

Storytelling: Andy Newville, 4th.

Great Speeches: Julia Pearson, 5th; and Zepherian Richardson, 4th.
