Mayor signs two proclamations

Perham Mayor Tim Meehl has proclaimed April to be National Donate Life Month, and April 13-19 as National Library Week, in 2014.

The proclamations were signed at the March 10 meeting of the Perham City Council.

National Donate Life Month

With nearly 115,000 Americans – 3,000 of those being from Minnesota – waiting for a life-saving transplant amid a serious shortage of organ donations, the city of Perham is urging residents to consider becoming organ donors.

The proclamation signed by Mayor Meehl observes National Donate Life Month in Perham by recognizing that “organ, eye and tissue donation is a gift which extends hope and healing to those in need.”

According to the proclamation, about nearly 6,000 preventable deaths occur in America each year due to a shortage of donated organs. One organ, eye or tissue donor can save or improve the lives of up to 60 people.

Minnesota is a leader in registered organ donors, the proclamation states. Any person of any age can become a donor by indicating their preference on their state ID or by registering online through either Donate Life Minnesota or Lifesource, one of the county’s leading organ procurement organizations.

National Library Week

The mayor signed this proclamation to encourage city residents to visit the Perham Area Library between April 13-19 “to take advantage of the wonderful library resources available.”

The proclamation notes that libraries continuously grow and evolve to meet changing needs in their communities, providing programs to help job seekers with resume writing, students with homework and student loan applications, older adults with retirement planning, and much more.

It goes on to state that “librarians are trained, tech-savvy professionals, providing technology training and access to downloadable content like e-books.”

“Libraries and librarians bring together community members to enrich and shape the community and address local issues,” states the proclamation, thereby helping to change lives in their communities and schools.

Perham will join other communities, libraries, librarians, library workers and supporters across America in celebration of National Library Week.
