Today is Tornado Drill Day

Perham area residents will be hearing sirens today, Thursday, April 24, as a part of Minnesota’s statewide Tornado Drill Day.

The outdoor warning sirens will sound at 1:45 p.m. and again at 6:55 p.m.

Communities across Otter Tail County will be participating in the drills. Those that use the county-hosted notification system will also receive a phone call, email, and/or text message.

The drills are done to remind people of the sound they’ll hear in case of imminent or actually occurring severe weather.

It is also a perfect time for schools, daycares, nursing homes, businesses and families to practice their emergency sheltering plans.

The tornado drills are conducted as a part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is this week, April 21–25.

After the long cold winters and relatively short mild summers of the past few years, many people may have forgotten how to react when severe weather warnings and events occur. But taking just a few moments to remind them can save time – and possibly lives – when it really matters.
