Children’s Garden taking registration

The 4-H Children’s Garden is in its seventh season and is taking registrations for this year’s growing season.

The garden is for youth in first through third grades in Otter Tail County.

Youth enrolled in the 4-H Children’s Garden plan, plant, maintain and harvest a 6x4-feet plot. Youth who have completed the fourth through sixth grades are eligible to participate in the Jr. Master Garden program.

Both these gardens are located on the fairgrounds in Perham.

The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners, extension staff and community volunteers, who love kids and gardening, help assist and educate youth in the gardening experience.

Along with learning gardening skills, leadership and positive citizenship through engaging hands-on activities, youth are also educated in healthy eating habits.

Research has proven that youth who garden tend to eat healthier. With the ever-increasing problem of obesity in youth, nutritional education is vital. Gardening is a simple way that families can take a bite out of their grocery expenses and promote healthy lifestyles at a formative age.

For more information or a registration form, contact the local extension office at 218-385-5420.

Registration deadline is Thursday, May 15.

The 4-H Children’s Garden is limited to 20 youth; the Jr. Master Garden Program is limited to 10.

Donations for the 4-H Children’s Garden Program are always accepted, and may be sent to the University of Minnesota Extension Service, 118 N Main, PO Box 250, New York Mills MN 56567.
