Overnight rain as much as 5 inches poses street flooding issues in Fargo

FARGO – The Fargo-Moorhead area was hit with heavy rains overnight, causing some issues on streets in north Fargo and West Fargo.

Fargo’s Hector International Airport reported 4.5 inches of rain as of 7 a.m. this morning, while Moorhead reported 2.85 inches, said Dave Kellenbenz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

WDAY meteorologist Daryl Ritchison said 3 to 5 inches fell on a line from West Fargo into north Fargo and northern Clay County.

In West Fargo, the Interstate 94 exit for Sheyenne Street is flooded, closing westbound access. Police Lt. Duane Sall said crews pumping the floodwater likely won't be done until about noon.

"It's still got a long way to go," Sall said about 9:15 a.m.

City officials in Fargo said shortly after 8 a.m. that street flooding in the area around the industrial park on 12th Avenue North was preventing some employees of plants there from getting to work this morning.

Kellenbenz said about 5.25 inches of rain was reported north of Moorhead, while radar indicated as much as 5-6 inches may have fallen in the Ulen, Minn., area.

Also, he said, radar indicated 6-8 inches may have fallen in the Averill, Minn., area.

Averill is about seven miles north of Glyndon.

Kellenbenz said there should be a break from heavy rain for a good part of today, but he said strong thunderstorms could move in late this afternoon and again overnight.

He said there was an overland flood warning in effect for parts of the area today, including the Dilworth area, where the Buffalo River had risen above flood stage of 12 feet this morning.
