Man dies after paraskiing on West Battle Lake
Sheriff deputies reported on Feb. 19 that a Richville man died after paraskiing
on West Battle Lake on Saturday, Feb. 17.
The man was identified as 64-year-old Dennis Stanford of Richville, a community located southwest of Perham.
"He was found unconscious and unresponsive on the ice," said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke. "It was not immediately known whether he had a medical event or if there was an accident while paraskiing."
Stanford was wearing safety equipment, including a helmet.
"There did not appear to be any obvious malfunctions with Stanford's equipment," said Van Dyke.
The west-northwest wind near Battle Lake was 17 miles per hour when the call came into authorities. First responders said that Stanford did not appear to have sustained any trauma.
He was taken by LifeLink helicopter to St. Cloud where he later was pronounced deceased.
Arrest made after crimes on east side of Franklin Lake
Sheriff deputies reported that a Barnesville man was arrested near the northeast side of Franklin Lake, northeast of Pelican Rapids, on Feb. 13.
Caleb Lawrence Rogers, 19, was arrested following a cabin break-in on Birch Grove Drive.
He was charged with second-degree burglary, damage to property, drug possession and having a loaded and uncased firearm. The arrest was made near the intersection of Highways 59 and 31.
Theft reported near Mills
A resident near Highway 10, New York Mills, reported the theft of eight old vehicle batteries.
The call came in to sheriff deputies on Feb. 13.
Scam averted near Deer Creek
A resident near Deer Creek received a phone call on Feb. 14 requesting verification of his Social Security number.
The caller said this was needed in order to complete a previous transaction made by the Otter Tail County resident.
The Deer Creek area resident hung up and then called the sheriff's office. He was informed by law enforcement to check his credit report.
Deputies also told the resident to call them back if there was any indication of fraud.
