Letter to the Editor Walk to school day a success
On behalf of PartnerSHIP4Health, thank you to the Perham-Dent School District, St Paul's Lutheran School and St. Henry's Catholic School for hosting International Walk to School Day on Wednesday Oct. 5. It was a wonderful celebration of more than 1,000 participants walking and biking along the Cal Miller Bike route.
We appreciate the investment of time and energy given by the schools and many volunteers. This strategic event sets the stage for healthy, active living for our next generation.
We are a nation at risk with alarming obesity rates on the rise. It's imperative that we get our students moving. What an important message you gave to the students of Perham on International Walk to School Day.
We can measure our success not only in that one special morning, but when we have more students walking and biking more frequently we'll have sustained our efforts.
Your Perham schools know that activity results in improved learning and they've been a model in increasing activity throughout the school day. Let's support those efforts as a community because we all benefit.
Special thanks go to Coordinator Trish McClellan, Perham Memorial Hospital and Home for donating apples, Bauck Bus Company and its drivers, the police force, City Officials, the Perham Dent School Board, volunteers from the Lions Club and Rotary, Lakes Area Bike Club, and to the families that participated.
