Ranked Cardinals just miss perfect score at Girls Harrier Invite

PERHAM — No. 8-2A Willmar placed the top four runners and five of the top six in winning the Perham Harrier Girls Cross Country Invitational Thursday. No. 3-A Perham placed third behind the Cardinals and Fargo North (North Dakota No. 6A).

Willmar junior Samantha Hanson won the race in a time of 15:02.2. Jessa Hanson, Serena Monson and Sophie Schmitz placed second through fourth, while fellow teammate Kayla Rudie finished in sixth.

Roseau’s Madeline Huglen kept the Cardinals from a perfect score with a fifth place time of 15:21.8.

Brynnan Covington

Freshman Brynnan Covington resumed her top spot among the Yellowjackets with an eighth place finish in 15:39.6.

Senior Lizzie Fudge and seventh-grader Caitlin Covington placed 16th and 17th with times of 15:53.8 and 15:54.0 respectively. Covington’s insertion into the varsity lineup has improved an already good team with the seventh-grader popping into the three-spot.

Sophomore Sydney Karels placed 31st in 16:17.5.

Another young runner who has made a varsity impact is eighth-grader Jenna Wegscheid who finished fifth for Perham in 40th place (16:35.5).

Mary Riestenberg and Racole Karels rounded out Perham’s top seven with Riestenberg in 46th place (16:49.0) and Karels 51st (16:57.3).

Roseau and Park Rapids finished behind Perham in third and fourth. Perham defeated the Rams by 22 points (106-128) and the Panthers by 33 (106-139). Both teams will pressure Perham in the coming Section 8A race at the end of the month.

There were 214 runners in the field in Perham’s largest home invitational to date with over 900 runners participating in the full compliment of races.
