Perham advances to 8AAA semifinals 35-14 over EGF

PERHAM — The No. 3 Perham Yellowjackets built at 28-0 halftime lead and defeated No. 6 East Grand Forks 35-14 to advance to the Section 8AAA semifinals against No. 2 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Saturday in Glyndon.

Perham scored all five of their touchdowns on the ground and from long range.

Cole Schmitz put Perham up 7-0 on a 31-yard counter three minutes into the game.

"Everyone played great together," Schmitz said. "We formed as one heartbeat, one unit, and we fought like we have all year and we're going to do that Saturday."

Josh Still added seven more points three minutes into the second quarter on an 75-yard scamper down the Green Wave sideline for a 14-0 lead. Still had an 86-yard second half kickoff return nullified by a block in the back in a game he again showed his scoring ability from anywhere on the field.

The Yellowjackets added two more touchdowns before the half when Payton Jordahl scored from 16 yards out with 2:30 until the break. Eli Beachy scored from 37 yards a minute later for the 28-0 halftime advantage.

Trevor Selk broke a six quarter scoreless streak for East Grand Forks against Perham when he scored on a quarterback sneak from a yard out with 7:35 to play in the third quarter. Perham had outscored East Grand Forks 75-0 in six quarters of play this season until Selk scored.

"They were a different team," Perham Head Coach Mike Jordahl said. "So are we. We've improved drastically and we knew they were going to come out and give us a really good luck. We were really fortunate to get things moving."

Jordahl scored his second touchdown of the game from the five two minutes into the fourth quarter for the final Yellowjacket score.

Tye Ausmus added a touchdown from three yards out with 6:32 to play. Selk was good around right end for the two-point conversion.

Perham outgained EGF 384-200 in total yards and led in first downs gained 16-9.

373 of Perham's yards were gained on the ground.

Jordahl rushed 18 times for 119 yards and scored twice. Beachy rushed 19 times for 188 yards and a touchdown.

Perham was four of 10 converting on third down, two of two on fourth down. Time of possession was even 24:39 for Perham, 23:21 for EGF.

Brandon Olson led the Perham defense with nine tackles, five solo.

Saturday’s game in Glyndon is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The Rebels defeated Perham in Glyndon 21-7 in week three.

"We've got a bitter taste in our mouth from last time and we're ready for it," said Coach Jordahl.

Perham improves to 6-3 on the season.

No. 4 Pequot Lakes defeated No. 5 Roseau 13-12 in double overtime to advance to the other semifinal against No. 1 seed and No. 8-2A Park Rapids Area.

In Section 6A, New York Mills fell at Royalton 47-6.

In 6AA, Ottertail Central stomped Long Prairie/Grey Eagle 47-8. Pelican Rapids beat Osakis 49-30. Breckenridge shutout Wadena-Deer Creek 35-0. 

In 8AA Frazee defeated Crookston 35-12. 

In 8AAAA Albany defeated Fergus Falls 34-21.
