DL Angels eliminate Bluffton in Region 14C playoffs

PERHAM — The Detroit Lakes Angels scored 13 unanswered runs to erase a 3-0 deficit eliminating the Bluffton Braves 13-3 in eight innings to remain alive in the Region 14C amateur baseball playoffs Friday night at Krueger Field.

Cory Tumberg launched a two-run home run scoring Kevin Tumberg to stake the Braves out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Jordan Vaughan scored unearned on an error in the fifth to give Bluffton starter Dustin Geiser a 3-0 lead.

Kirk McLeod singled in Trevor Tappe to get DL on the board in the sixth cutting the lead to 3-1 before DL exploded for six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to end the game via the mercy rule 13-3.

DL took the lead on a two-RBI double by Taylor Fuhs and added to it on a RBI sacrifice fly by McLeod. DL scored on four hits in the inning and an error to lead 7-3 after seven innings of play. The Angels chased Geiser after 6 ⅓ innings pitched, tagging him for the loss.

DL put the game away in a mirrored offensive eighth inning scoring six times on four hits and Bluffton imploded defensively aiding the Angels’ effort with four gaffes in the field.

Phil Doll had a bases clearing double to right field for DL’s big hit of the inning and scored the 10th nail in the coffin unearned to give DL starter Brock Johnson an inning off.

Johnson fanned two batters in Bluffton’s final at-bats and stranded a runner at second to end the game. The Angel ace pitched eight innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits. He struck out six Braves and walked one.

Geiser allowed seven runs, six earned in his 6.1 innings on the mound. Kevin Tumber allowed six runs, five earned, pitching the remainder of the game for Bluffton.

DL outhit Bluffton 15-6, led by Fuhs’ 4-4 effort. He scored twice and had a pair of RBIs. Bryan Buhr was 3-5 with a run scored. Tappe scored three times for DL.

Tom Tellers had the only multi-hit game for Bluffton going 2-3.

Detroit Lakes will face Bertha at 5 p.m. in Perham Saturday. The winner will earn a bid to the state tournament and a shot at Long Prairie at 8 p.m. Saturday for the Region 14C crown.
