Yellowjacket girls complete regular season sweep of Frazee

The Perham Yellowjacket girls basketball team kicked of an important week of Heart O’Lakes Conference and Section 8AA games with a crucial 61-56 victory over the Frazee Hornets.

The Yellowjackets rallied from a first half deficit and used a strong start to the second half to maintain a lead. However, they needed a couple of key rebounds from Serena Langen and Josie Beachy as well as a key steal late from Beachy to help seal the victory.

Beachy led a balanced scoring attack which featured four players in double figures. Beachy finished with 15 points. Gabby DeBoer added 14 points and hit four of her five free throw attempts in the second half. Jadyn Benedict finished with 12 points, all from the 3-point line.

The Yellowjackets hit six 3-pointers, with five of them coming in the second half. Langen hit a first half 3-pointer, while Beachy and Benedict connected from the outside in the second half. Langen added 11 points for Perham as well in the win.

The Yellowjackets spoiled a strong night from Frazee’s Paige Ziegler. She led all scorers with 16 points.

Ana Fleisher led the way for Frazee from the 3-point line. She connected on five of the team’s eight 3-pointers. Shania Lehman and Hailey Ellingson-Wirth finished with 10 points each for the Hornets.

The Yellowjackets trailed by five, 29-24, at the half, yet used a strong second half to grab the victory. They outscored Frazee, 37-27, earning the five point win on the road.

It gave the Yellowjackets the series sweep over the Hornets and improved their mark to 7-2 in the Heart O’Lakes Conference. The Yellowjackets are 14-5 overall and return on the road for a Friday tilt with Hawley. The Yellowjackets are now 10-2 against Section 8AA opponents, with both of their losses coming to Barnesville. The Yellowjackets defeated Hawley, 37-25, earlier in the season in Perham. The Nuggets are searching for their first HOL win. They are 0-6 in the HOL and have lost six straight overall. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Hawley.
