NYM Softball: Eagles sweep Menahga

By John George

The end of the Eagles seven-game homestand came to an end Thursday with a doubleheader sweep against Menahga.

Eagle pitcher Steph Cichy didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning of game one as New York Mills picked up a 9-0 victory.

Cichy and Emaleigh Roberts each had two-run hits in the fourth inning as the Eagles opened up a 5-0 lead. Kim Becker and Sam Welter drove in runs in the fifth to put Mills up 7-0. They added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with Roberts scoring on a Kristen Perala single. Nicole Nebosis walked and scored on an error.

In game two as the visiting team, Mills scored six runs in the top of the first and added an important insurance run in the fourth in a 7-6 win.

Nebosis and Morgan Kahilainen each had two RBI in the first inning. Nebosis drove in the eventual game winning run in the fourth, scoring Jenna Essala.

Menahga came back with two runs in the fourth, then added four in the fifth to pull to within one run. They threatened in the sixth and seventh, but were unable to get the tying run across.

The two teams split last year's double dip with Mills taking the first game, 9-1, and the Braves taking game two, 11-1.

The Lady Eagles will head south on May 5 for two games at Parkers Prairie. Mills won both regular season games last season against the Panthers, 8-2 and 12-5. But Parkers Prairie was able to pick up an 8-3 win over the Eagles in the 6A Sub-Section semifinals.

New York Mills will remain on the road May 7 for a doubleheader at Verndale. The Pirates have won their last three games against the Lady Eagles.

Pillager will be in New York Mills for the final Park Region doubleheader of the season on May 12. Mills split with the Huskies last year.

The final game of the conference schedule, and the regular season will be at Sebeka on May 14. The Eagles won the meeting with the Trojans earlier this season, 4-1.
