PHS Baseball: Frazee rallies to win 'Battle'

Sam Warne dives back into 1st base during the Jackets 'Battle of the Bees' with Frazee on Monday. The Hornets beat Perham for the 1st time since 1999, 9-6.

By John George

After making a nice comeback Monday in the "Battle of the Bees" against Frazee, three errors cost Perham as they lost a non-conference game to the Hornets, 9-6 at Krueger Field.

Frazee had the early lead, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

After scoring one in the fourth, Perham rallied in the fifth inning. Brad Ellingson, who scored the Jackets run in the fourth, got the fifth inning going with a two-run double. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Ben Bucholz, who's second hit of the day brought in two more runs to tie the game. A wild pitch then scored Tyler Lynne and Perham had a 6-5 lead.

Things fell apart for the Jackets in the next inning, as Frazee took advantage of three errors to score four runs and regain the lead. Perham threatened in the sixth, but the Hornets held them off for their first win against the Yellowjackets since 1999.

Sweep in DL

Last Friday, the Jackets improved to 10-0 in the Mid-State Conference with a sweep in Detroit Lakes, 10-0 and 8-1.

Taylor Doll had a complete game shutout in the opener, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out four. Perham's offense was steady throughout the game, scoring in each of the final five innings.

Tyler Lynne connected on a three-run homer in the sixth to help the Jackets break the game open. He finished 2-for-4 with four RBI. Bucholz was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Ellingson had three of the teams 15 hits.

Perham's offense was steady again in game two, scoring every-other inning and collecting 11 hits.

Lynne hit his second homer of the day in the first inning as Perham got off to a 3-0 lead. He drove in his fourth run of the game in the third, scoring Anthony Ruther.

Ruther would hit a home run of his own in the fifth, a two-run shot.

On the mound, Shane Miller went six innings for the win, scattering five hits and just one walk.

Split at S-M

Perham finished their Mid-State schedule Tuesday at Staples-Motley with a doubleheader split.

The Cardinals 4-3 win game one stopped the Jackets conference win-streak at 16 games (10-0 this year and their final six in 2008). Perham came back to take game two, 7-3, to finish 11-1 in the Mid-State Conference.

Perham managed just two hits in game one, both were RBI doubles by Sam Meyer and Lynne.

Doll pitched another complete game in the nightcap, striking out eight while allowing just three hits and one walk.

Bucholz went 3-fo4 with a pair of doubles in game two. Miller and Ruther each drove in a pair of runs.

Perham did much better at the plate in the second game, pounding out 13 hits.

The Jackets will begin their stretch of three non-conference games to finish the regular season on May 18 when they host Sebeka. The game was originally scheduled for May 22, but was moved up to accommodate both teams. The Jackets have won their last two games against the Trojans.

Perham will finish the season on the road at Pelican Rapids on May 19 and at D-G-F on May 21. The Yellowjackets beat Pelican Rapids in the regular season last year, 10-2. But the Vikings beat Perham twice in the postseason, 2-0 and 4-2.
