NYM Baseball: Eagles struggle after beating Verndale

By John George

The New York Mills baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak and avenged an earlier loss to Verndale with a 13-2 win over the Pirates on Thursday.

Jarrod Norton was a two-way threat as he went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI. He also picked up the win on the mound for Mills, going five innings and allowing just one earned run.

Ted Rohr was also 3-for-3 and drove in four runs. Two of those RBI came in the second inning as the Eagles scored eight runs to break the game open.

His two-run hit was the fourth-straight single coming on two outs in the inning. After Spencer Imsande reached on an error, Nathan Berg connected on a two-run homer to put Mills up 11-0. The Eagles scored two more in the second and added two more in the third on hits by Norton and Rohr.

NY Mills finished with 16 hits with nine of the 10 players with at bats in the game reaching base at least once. Nine different players scored a run and six drove in runs, including four players with two or more RBI.

Verndale won the first meeting this year in the season opener, 14-8.

Osakis game canceled

The Eagles were scheduled to play at Osakis on May 8, but the game was canceled for various conflicts, according to Mills head coach Chris Bushinger. He said the game is not likely to be rescheduled.

One-hit at B/EV

NY Mills struggled on the road Monday in an 11-0 non-conference loss at Browerville/Eagle Valley (6-7).

The Eagles had just one hit, a third inning single by Imsande, and three base runners in the game.

The Tigers also won last year's meeting, 10-4.

Sloppy loss to Pillager

The Eagles got back to Park Region competition on May 12 with a game against Pillager.

The game was moved to New York Mills because of field conditions, but that didn't help the Eagles as they committed eight errors in a 12-7 loss

Mills got off to a 4-0 lead in the first with Maison Roberts, Ted Rohr and Norton driving in runs.

Pillager responded with three in the second inning and four more in the third to take a brief lead. The Eagles came back in their half of the third with three more runs. Norton drove in his second run of the game, followed by a two-run single by Nate Berg.

The Huskies took advantage of three Mills errors in the fifth and six to score five more runs.

Mills won the first meeting with the Huskies on April 16, 5-4.

New York Mills will finally return to Jacobson Field to host Sebeka on May 14. The Eagles have been shutout 19-0 in their last three games against Sebeka, including a 4-0 loss on April 21.

Mills will have back-to-back road games on May 18-19, starting with a trip to Wadena to face the Wolverines. W-DC is 3-8 on the season (3-7 Mid-State) and had lost four in a row (Through 5/8). The Eagles won their last meeting in 2007, 8-2.

On May 19, Mills will look to split the season series with Bertha-Hewitt in Bertha. The Bears came from behind on April 23 to win their fourth straight over the Eagles, 6-5.

Otter Tail Central will be at Jacobson Field on May 21 for the regular season finale. Mills beat the Bulldogs on April 28 in Battle Lake, 12-8.
