Amateur baseball season gets underway
The Dent Bulldogs made an impressive debut in the HI-10 League Sunday with a 20-2 win over New York Mills.
Dent got things going in the first with a three-run homer by Darin Stoll. They collected 10 hits in the game and took advantage of 13 walks issued by Millers pitchers.
Jamie Gaarsland, Erik Koskiniemi and Seth Hudala each had two hits for the Bulldogs. Nick Stoll, Ernie Kawlewski also had hits for the Bulldogs.
Chris Stoll had a strong debut on the mound for Dent, going five innings with seven strike outs. He also went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Kris Ostlie pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Trent Ament had a pair of hits for NY Mills and drove in both of the Millers runs.
In other HI-10 play, Wadena-Deer Creek opened with a 8-2 win over Detroit Lakes.
In other area baseball action on Mother's Day, the Dent Wildcats opened Countryside League action with an 11-2 win over Frazee. Also in the Countryside, Hawley beat Pelican Rapids, 11-2.
Vergas beat Bluffton, 8-5, in an intra-league match-up. The HI-10/Countryside season began May 3 with a 7-0 win by W-DC over Hawley in another intra-league game.
Pirates open at Bertha May 16
The Perham Pirates will open their season on the road at Bertha on Saturday, May 16. Opening pitch will be 1:30 p.m.
Perham beat the Blaze in two out of three games last year, including a 13-2 win in the HI-10 playoffs.
The Pirates will be on the road again for their second game on May 24 in Dent against the Wildcats. Perham's home opener isn't until Friday, June 5 in their rematch with Bertha.
