NYM Track: Eagle girls 5th, boys 6th at PRC

By Dan Schik

The Pillager boys took advantage of the Park Region Championship moving from Sebeka to Pillager on May 14.

The Huskies won the PRC title with 153 points, well ahead of second place Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale (101). The New York Mills boys finished sixth with 42 points.

The meet was moved to Pillager because of the funeral services of 38-year-old Katrine Savoie, a teacher at Sebeka.

The biggest highlight for the NY Mills track team was the throwing events, which were dominated by the brother-sister combination of Brandon and Brittnie Menze. Between the two of them they managed to take home three-conference championships and a conference runner-up. Both were seeded in the top two for both the shot put and discus, they let their technique and past experience do the talking.

Brandon, seeded second in the shot put, trailed by only one inch heading into the final three throws. Just after finishing the 4x100m relay, which provided a great warm-up, he managed to pull it all together on his very last throw. He effortlessly launched the shot-put to 46'10", beating his personal best by 7" and opened up his margin of victory to almost two feet.

Brandon also had a nice day in the discus and finished as the conference runner-up with a throw of 124'9".

His sister Brittnie was also a force to be reckoned with. After her very first throw she led the girls shot put and never looked back. When it was all said and done Brittnie was crowned conference champion with the next closest competitor four feet shy of her mark. She threw 36'7", which would have tied the school record if she hadn't already broken it earlier this year. Brittnie also had a very impressive day in the discus. With a throw flirting with the school record, she ended up breaking her personal best by over five feet and stole the conference title (98'2").

Not to be out done, Eric Tumberg had an outstanding day in the jumping events, placing in the top five in all three events. His best performance came in the triple jump were he soared past his previous best by over a foot to win with a leap of 39'0.25".

"I knew I hit the bored perfecting and everything felt so effortless," Tumberg said.

He also noticed while he was flying through the air he could see all the freshly turned sand from all the other jumpers and once he landed he made track of his own, which lead all the way to the top of the podium as a conference champ.

Tumberg also finished fifth in the long jump (18'4")_and the high jump (5'2").

Parkers Prairie was the defending PRC boys champs. They finished fifth this year.

The New York Mills girls finished fifth with 46 points. Osakis won the PRC girls team title with 144 points. Otter Tail Central was second (137), followed by defending champ Pillager in third (126).

Alicia Boe finished second in the 1600m run (5:26.54) and third in the 800m (2:31.05). The 4x100 relay team of Missy Pyle, Megan Cole, Menze and Taylor Curtis finished third (56.24).
