The New York Mills track and field team will have four athletes competing in two events each at the Section 6A Championships today (May 28) at MSU-Moorhead. Field events begin at 11 a.m. with final heats in all running events starting at 1 p.m.

The Eagles competed in the 6A Sub-Section 2 Meet last Thursday in Barnesville. Both teams finished in seventh place. The boys had 32 points with the girls finishing with 28.

Perham won both boys and girls team titles.

Leading the way for New York Mills was the brother-sister throwing tandem of Brandon and Brittnie Menze.

Brandon, a senior, won the shot put at the sub-section meet with a throw of 46'10". That will be the No. 1 seeded throw at the 6A Championships at MSU-M by five inches.

Brandon will also compete in the discus at MSU-M after a second place finish in Barnesville with a throw of 126'4". He will be ranked No. 5 at the 6A Championship in that event.

Only the top-2, plus distance qualifiers, advance to State from the section meet. The State qualifying distance in discus for boys is 152'0". In the shot put, it's 51'9".

Brittnie, a junior, will also compete for a shot at State in both throwing events. She was the sub-section runner-up in the shot put (38'6") behind Schultz. She finished fifth in the discus (102'8").

At the 6A Championships, Menze will be ranked fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus. Her throw of 38'6" in the shot put is just one inch off the State qualifying distance.

Two other Eagle athletes will also compete in two events.

The boys will have Ben Jacobson in the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. Jacobson, a junior, finished third in the 300m at the sub-section meet (44.10). He was fourth in the 110m (17.35).

Jacobson will be ranked ninth in the 110m hurdles at the 6A Championships. He has the 10th best time in the 300m race.

Freshman Alicia Boe will be competing for the Lady Eagles in the 800m run and the 1600m. At the sub-section meet in Barneville, she won the 800m with a time of 2:25.74. She finished second in the 1600m (5:22.18). She's ranked third in both events in the section finals.
