Although no championships were won by the Perham Yellowjacket golfers competing at the Class AA State Tournament, all three Jacket golfers met their personal expectations.

PHS freshman Dan Cavanagh, making his second straight State appearance, finished tied for 49th place with a two-day, 18-hole score of 163 (42-40/41-40).

"I guess I could've done better," Cavanagh said. "But I did better than last year. Which is good. I think I could have putted better. But there's always next year."

Cavanagh finished 80th last year at Ridges at Sand Creek G.C. in Jordan with a 181 (45-46/46-44).

Winning the Class AA Individual Boys Title was Red Wing's Mark Giorgi, who finished with a 145. Frazee's Beau Hanson, who was third at the Section 8AA, finished fourth overall with a 149. Other Section 8AA golfers competing were: Warroad's Hayden Timm (T-36th, 159) and D-G-F's Chris Clark and East Grand Forks' Casey Ristau (T-40th, 160).

Orono won the Class AA boys team title with a score of 607. Roseau, the Section 8AA champs, finished 6th with a 648.

On the girls side, Perham sophomore Holly Karkela finished tied for 31st place with a 176 (45-44/42-45). Two years ago as an eighth grader, Karkela finished 78th in the Class A State Tournament with a 218 (56-58/49-55) at Izaty's Resort in Onamia.

Karkela said prior to State that she was hoping to keep her score below 89 each day, which she did. She had shot an 89 last week in a practice round in Jordan.

Yellowjacket senior Leah Richter finished 55th with a 190 (45-47/49-49). She accomplished her goal of shooting a 92, which she did in her practice round, and on the first day of competition.

Winning the girls Class AA individual title was Minnewaska's Emily Roering, who shot a 146. She led the Minnewaska girls to their fourth straight State title, and second straight in Class AA. They had won a pair of Class A titles before the Minnesota State High School League added a third class prior to 2008.

Minnewaska (610) crushed the rest of the field, taking the team title by 67 points over second place Red Wing (677). The Lady Lakers five golfers finish in the top-20 individually. Crookston, the Section 8AA champs, finished third at State (719).

Other individual Section 8AA golfers included: Robin Hutchinson of Detroit Lakes (12th, 167), Emily Hallie of Roseau (T-14th, 168), and Amber Hovland of Fergus Falls (68th, 199).
