The New York Mills 13-year-old Babe Ruth team cruised through the Timberline League Tournament to advance to this weekend's State Tournament in Hawley.

Mills finished the regular season 22-2 and went 3-0 in the tournament to keep their season going. They started the Timberline Tournament with a win over Perham Gold, 24-3.

They then beat Staples twice to take the tournament title. The first time the team's met in the semifinals, Mills won, 14-4, with Brandon Kupfer striking out eight batters over five innings.

The championship game in Perham was cut short due to rain. Since both Mills and Staples, the league's runner-up, were both advancing to State, Staples forfeited the championship game after rain stoped action in the third inning with the Eagles up 2-1. Tyler Patron had six innings in the shortened game.

Staples was the last place team in the Timberline League during the regular season, but they beat No. 3 Park Rapids twice and No. 2 Perham gold to get to the championship.

Mills will open the State Tournament in Hawley today (Aug. 6) against Fergus Falls at 9:30 a.m. If they win, they will play Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner between Melrose and Roseau. If NYM falls in their first round game, they will play Friday at 9:30 a.m. against the loser between Melrose and Roseau.
