The Perham/New York Mills girls swim team opened their season at the Detroit Lakes Pentathlon on Monday. The hometown Lakers were strong, scoring 199 points to take first place. The Lady Jackets were fifth in the seven-team event with 76.5 points.

The pentathlon is a competition with five events: 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and the 100m I.M. Nearly all of the girls from each team swims in all five events. There were an average of 116 participants in each event, with a high of 124 swimmers in the 50 free.

Not all of the swimmers, however, contributed to the team score this year, as in past D.L. Pentathlons. Perham/New York Mills had four scoring swimmers. Leading the way was sophomore Kelsey Kratzke, who scored a total of 38 points for the team. She finished third overall in the 50 breaststroke (34.08), eighth in the 50 fly (31.82), and eighth in the 100 I.M. (1:12.23).

Last season, Kratzke became the first Lady Jacket swimmer to qualify for the Class A State Meet. She finished 22nd with a time of 1:12.00. She holds the school record in that event with a time of 1:11.72. Perham/NYM has sent divers to State prior to Kratzke's swimming appearance last season.

Another sophomore, Bailey Meyer, was 15th in scoring with 18 points. Her best event was the 50 butterfly, where she finished fourth in 31.45. She was 14th in the 50 backstroke (33.47).

Right behind Meyer was senior Whitney Carow in 16th place with 14.50 points. She was fifth in the 50 breaststroke (36.10) and a team-best 16th in the 50 free (28.64).

Also scoring was sophomore Beth Ingebrand, who was 28th with 6 points. Her best event was the 50 breaststroke, where she was 11th (38.11).

"We have a very good sophomore class," head coach Sherri Ressler. "We were already deep in that class and we added a few more new swimmers in that grade this year."

There are 10 sophomores on the team this fall. The Jackets have four seniors: Maggie Carlson, Sara Lee, Whitney Carrow and Leah Restad. Carlson and Carrow, along with junior Zoe Potts, are team captains. The teams only other junior is newcomer Marlee Helmeke.

The girls will have their first dual meet of the year today (Sept. 3) at Staples-Motley starting at 6 p.m. They will have a week off following that meet before going to St. Cloud on Sept. 10.
