The Yellowjackets played a familiar foe Tuesday night in their home opener at Prairie Wind Gymnasium, Section 8AA rival Detroit Lakes.

Perham played better as the night went on, and pulled out a 3-1 win over the Lakers (25-16, 16-25, 25-20, 25-19).

"I thought our serve return was much improved over last week," head coach Dan Christenson said. "I think that was the difference. Kaylan Huber played a great game in the back row and our serve receive set the tone. It allowed us to get into an offense and generate points."

Neither team ran away with any game, but Perham scored key points in bunches when they needed them.

In game one, Perham led 15-12 when Elisa Moenkedick stepped to the service line and delivered five points, including three-straight ace serves. Another ace by Kelli Meehl closed out game one, 25-16.

The Jackets led game two early, but Detroit Lakes crept back into the game. Behind the serve of Ashlyn Jasken, the Lakers went from a 17-15 lead, to an eight-point advantage before closing out with a 25-16 win t even the match, 1-1.

The service game came together for Perham in game three. The Jackets had five aces and put together several long rallies on their way to the 25-20 victory. Game four was tied seven times, the last time at 15-15. An ace by Moenkedick and two by Huber put the Jackets ahead 22-17. Another pair of long rallies went the Jackets way and they closed out the win, 25-19.

"This is the kind of volleyball this team will play," Christenson said. "A lot of long rallies and keeping points alive. We don't have the terminating presence on the net the entire game like we used to. We'll have to scramble for some points and work the ball to Katrina (Moenkedick) and Elisa when we can."

Katrina, a sophomore and the younger of the two sisters, finished with 13 kills, two blocks and 15 assists. Elisa, the team's only senior, finished with seven kills, three digs, three blocks and a team-high five aces.

Perham has now won 15-straight over the Lakers, including a 3-1 win in the 8AA playoffs last October.

Eden Prairie Tourney

The Jackets made their annual trip to Eden Prairie last weekend and finished 1-3.

"We were in every match," Christenson said. "We learned a lot, which we always do down there. It's great getting four matches against quality teams like that to start a season."

Perham lost their first match to Mayer-Lutheran, 2-0 (25-19, 25-13). Their second match of pool play was against Chanhassen. The Jackets won the first game, 25-23, then dropped the next two, 25-22, 15-3.

In their third match, Perham lost to Minneapolis Southwest, 2-0 (25-21, 25-22). They finished the tournament with a 2-0 win over Litchfield (25-22, 25-21).
